Lime Kiln

Looking to the north passed the crumbling Limekiln in the small Coombe below Green Cliff .
Limestone and Coal would be landed by small boats running on to the beach on a high tide and then departing on the next high tide.
Coal from a nearby Antharicite seam was also used in the Kilns in this area.

To the north of the Lime Kiln a 'Culm Bed' is exposed in the Cliffs .
An organic rich shale can be found in the Culm , this soft black clay like material - Bideford Black - runs alongside seams of high quality anthracite coal.
Bideford Black was mined for at least 200 years in Bideford and surrounding areas until cheaper chemically produced ‘blacks’ became available.
